Kedarnath

Located in the Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand is a holy town called “Kedarnath”. This town apparently was named in the honour of a King called “Kedar” who is supposed to have ruled in the Satya Yuga. In June 2013 this sacred town suffered massive destruction due to torrential rainfall that resulted in serious flooding. a. Best time to visit:

The ideal time to visit this town is in between March and October as a result of the climate being pleasant with, the temperatures ranging from a maximum of 17 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 12 degrees Celsius.

1. By train:

The railway station closest to Kedarnath is located in Rishikesh. The Rishikesh Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country. Taxi services from this station to Kedarnath are also available.

2. By bus:

There are many bus services available in Kedarnath that connects it to major cities located across the country.

3. By air:

Located at a distance of about 239 km is the Dehradun airport which is the nearest airport to Kedarnath. The Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is well connected to major cities in the country. Additionally, chopper services from Rishikesh to Kedarnath are also available.

c. Religious significance:

The Kedarnath temple located in this town is of religious significance and, is devoted to Lord Shiva. According to folklore the Pandavas from the Mahabharata were supposed to have pleased Lord Shiva with their penance in this town. This temple was built by the Pandavas in honour of Lord Shiva which, was then rebuilt by Adi Sankaracharya. This pilgrimage site is considered to be the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva and, is one of the twelve “Jyotirlingas”.
