Velankanni

Located on the Coromandel Coast in the Bay of Bengal is a holy town called Velankanni. This town is situated in the Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu. It is popular for a Roman Catholic Basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health. It is also commonly referred to as the “Lourdes of the East”. c. Religious significance:

It is the presence of a Roman Catholic Basilica devoted to Our Lady of Good Health that adds to the religious significance of this town. The origins of this basilica can be dated back to the 16th century. According to a myth this basilica was built due to three miracles that occurred in this town. These miracles included the appearance of Mary and Jesus in a dream of a shepherd boy, the sudden curing of a lame buttermilk vendor, and the survival of Portuguese sailors who were attacked by a violent sea storm. It was in 1962 that the status of this church was raised to basilica by Pope John XXIII.
