Thanjavur is a city popular for its “Chola Temples” and is located in Tamil Nadu. It is located in the Thanjavur district. c. Religious significance:

A myth states that the word “Thanjavur” is derived from “Tanjan” which means an asura i.e. a giant who was killed by an avatar of Lord Vishnu called Neelamegha Perumal. This city gained prominence due to the rise of the Chola dynasty. It was during this dynasty that a number of temples were constructed in and around the city. The most popular temple (Chola) being the Brihadeshwara Temple which, was devoted to Lord Shiva and was built by Emperor Rajaraja Chola I.
