Velneshwar Shiva Temple
A Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati known as the “Velneshwar Shiva Temple” is located in Maharashtra. This temple known for its beautiful architecture is situated in the Ratnagiri district at a distance of 72 km from Ganpatipule. Apparently this temple was initially built by a family called “Gadgil”, and was later reconstructed by Sri Trimbak Ravji Gokhale. Furthermore, this temple comprises of beautiful paintings and stone carvings that represent popular Hindu mythological stories. In addition, this temple attracts a large number of devotees during “Mahashivratri” i.e. a festival celebrated in honour of Lord Shiva.

The best time to visit this Lord Ganesh Temple is during the winter season which begins in December and ends in February when the climate is extremely pleasant with the temperature dropping to a minimum of 15 degree Celsius.

The nearest railway station to this temple is located in Chiplun at a distance of about 60 km. The Chiplun Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country via regular express and passenger trains.
2. By road:
If you intend to drive to this temple then the ideal starting points would be Kolhapur, Mumbai, Pune, and Ratnagiri.
- Via Kolhapur:
There are two routes from Kolhapur to this temple, and they are via NH-166 and via NH-48 and Karad-Chiplun Road.
- Via Mumbai:
There are three routes from Mumbai to this temple, and they are via NH-66, via Mumbai Highway/Mumbai-Bangalore Highway/Mumbai-Pune Highway and NH-48, and via Mumbai Highway/Mumbai-Bangalore Highway/Mumbai-Pune Highway.
- Via Pune:
There are three routes from Pune to this temple, and they are via NH-48 and Umbraj –Chiplun Road, via MH SH 70 and NH-66, and via NH-66.
- Via Ratnagiri:
There are two routes from Ratnagiri to this temple, and they are via MH SH-4 and via SH-105.

The closest major airport to this temple is located in Mumbai. The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is well connected to major cities in the country as well as international destinations.

Constructed using a typical old Hindu architectural design this Lord Shiva devoted temple does not possess any major religious significance or folklore. The inner chamber of this temple possesses beautiful paintings and stone carvings that display popular Hindu mythological stories. In addition, since this temple is linked closely to Lord Shiva, the festival Mahashivratri attracts a large number of ardent devotees annually. Furthermore, within the complex of this temple lie few small temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha, and Kal Bhairav i.e. an avatar of Lord Shiva himself.
