Kadamattom Church

Also known as “St George’s” is a catholic shrine in Kerala known as Kadamattom Church. This “Syrian catholic” church is located in town called “Muvattupuzha” in the Ernakulum district. This church is supposed to have been built during the 9th century by a priest called Mar Sabor.  Furthermore, this church comprises of “Persian Cross” that has been installed on the right wall in the altar room. This cross is said to have been made by Mar Sabor. In addition, a popular feast known as the “Kadamattom” is celebrated annually during the months January-February to honour the death anniversary of Mar Sabor.

The ideal time to visit this temple is during the winter the season which begins in October and ends in February with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 33 degree Celsius to a minimum of 17 degree Celsius.

c. Religious significance of the Kadamattom Church

According to a myth there lived an influential family in Muvattupuzha called the “Karthas”. Now it so happened that a small child belonging to this family contracted a disease that neither could be detected, as a result nor it could be cured. It was during this period that a priest called Mar Abo arrived from the Middle East, entered this region and was able to detect and cure the disease, as a result of which the family i.e. Karthas out of sheer joy gifted him land so that he could construct a church. It was eventually then on this land that was gifted to the priest that this church was eventually constructed.
