Shikarji

Located in Jharkhand in the Giridih district is an extremely popular Jain pilgrimage site i.e. tirtha called Shikarji. This pilgrimage site is considered to be the place where twenty out of the twenty four Jain “tirthankaras” were supposed to have attained moksha i.e. salvation. It is situated on the Parasnath Mountain in the Parasnath Range. Important travel information about this “pious site” is as follows.

a. Best time to visit:

The ideal time to visit this sacred Jain pilgrimage site is from October to March when the climate is extremely pleasant.

1. By train:

The closest railway station to this pilgrimage site is located in Parasnath. The Parasnath Railway Station is well connected to major cities in the country.

2. By road:

There are a number of bus services from Bokaro (a city located at about 57 km away from Parasnath) that connect to major cities in the country.

3. By air:

The closest airport to this pilgrimage site is located in Ranchi. The Ranchi Airport is well connected to major cities in the country.

c. Religious significance:

This pilgrimage site is significant because it is supposed to be the site where 20 out of the 24 “Thirthankaras” in the Jain religion obtained moksha i.e. salvation. It was first mentioned in the Jñātṛdhārmakātha, a scripture considered to be extremely important in Jainism. It is also said that Mallinātha, the nineteenth Jina practiced Samadhi at this pilgrimage site. Additionally, this site has also been mentioned in Pārśvanāthacarita, a twelfth century biography of Pārśva, the twenty third Thirthankara in Jainism.
